A Very Special Episode of My Journal

Mon May 25, 2009, 2:20 PM
I wanted an opinion on something. I occasionally get these wild hairs and want to do something different with my comic strip. I do want to do something that would allow me to be able to do slice-of-life stories (which is what it's seems I'm tending to lean towards now) and more fantastical stories. Yes, I would like to have my cake and eat it too. But the way the comic seems to be developing, it lends itself more to slice-of-life stories, and anything more too fantastical would disrupt the whole feel of the comic. I've heard of webcomics, where basically it starts out as simple slice-of-life and then suddenly partway throughout the series, "HOLY SHIT! ALIENS ARE STATING TO ATTACK!" and the audience who has been built up around what would be a slice-of-life comic are sitting there going "Dude! What the hell?"
I don't want to do that.
So... as awfully stupid as this may sound (and hey... sometimes good ideas sound stupid when said in a nutshell, but turn out good if handled well), but I am playing around with the idea of changing the setting to the future. What I was thinking of doing was something that would basically be roughly in the vein of Futurama... slice-of-life and fantastical stories mixed together and that is a comedy (although I wouldn't do the overt pop culture references, because that's not my bag of tricks.)
The idea is that Reynard and Edgar (and any other "furries") would be simply products of evolution. Certain animals evolved to have more humanlike traits and intelligence, while other animals would just remain as normal animals (yes... yes... How very pseudo-science of me).
And yes... there would be humans (Oh shit guise... OH SHIT!), but I don't want to pull that Gene Catlow/other furry comics crap where "FURRIES= GOOD/ HYOOMANS= BAAAAAAAAAAD! D:" I just want the two to be co-existing in roughly the way... I dunno... people of different races would co-exist today. Some humans/furries would be prejudiced against the integration, but many of them would just accept it as normal life and then move on.
And I'm thinking of doing it more in a "comic book" format in terms of panel arrangement and such (as opposed to a normal, 4-panel comic).
So... tell me what you think, if you'd like. If you like it or think it'll work please give me valid reasons as to why. Alternatively, if you don't like it or don't think it'll work... please also give me valid reasons as to why it wouldn't work. I generally like some objective viewpoints for this, because they'll probably spot flaws that I don't notice since I'm too attached to the subject matter.

I like the sounds of this.
Everyone loves the fantastical because it's fantastic, and everyone likes "slice of life because it makes even fantastical characters come to life more and seem more real and relatable.

Hi.
:iconsilkeyn:
This reminds me of that old movie about humans and Scaly-looking humanoids trying to coexist. The humanoids are superior in every way except in that they are burned by sea water. I can't remember the name of it though.

If you don't deus ex machina(which would mean there's an ending in the near future so bleh at that), mary sue, rip off anything, or do anything related to those literature faux pas, I wouldn't mind. But your idea sounds cool. Though I'd consider things that are true to life character studies, even if the setting is absolutely outrageous, E.g. Firefly, Watchmen, The Doom Patrol, Transmetropolitan. (HA, I'm such a nerd I can only name one thing that isn't a comic book out of those, and it's still a nerdy show). And they don't have to be ultra serious, but a way to go would be what I suggest. Or don't, don't even listen to me, and I guarantee it'll still be fine. :] My stuff's all suggestion.

great! I started out with comic book style panels from day one, so there you go.

That sounds like it could work. It seems to me that doing a more fantastical plot wouldn't work against you, and you are sort of already leaning in that direction.
I think that it would lend itself quite nicely to a comicbook-style format.

I think you should just do whatever you feel is right/whatever comes to you. The great thing about comics is that anything can happen. As long as you think it's good, there's a reaon for you to do it that way, and nobody can tell you it's wrong.

the idea is pretty good, it certanly explains how Reynold is able to create such fantastic devices (wall walking and full emmersion into video games).
But ultimately it's your comic, I can't tell you what is best. but in a lot of ways Edgar and Reynold have kind of earned their own niche as being slice-of-life. another option might just be to create a whole different comic that focuses on the fantastic situations. It would provide the best in that you can have a comic exclusive to each of your interests without having to do a story rework that could possibly have a negative impact. of course it would be a lot of work maintaining two comics and you would have to introduce a whole new set of characters while still maintaining the old ones. that is why I won't say this is the best option but is at least another option.

Well... admittedly I've tried doing two comics in the past and they never last less than about a week or so and then die pretty pitiful deaths before they have a chance to go anywhere. And I can only imagine that with future schoolwork and such, a second comic would probably last even shorter. :/

well that idea is obviously not the best choice, in which case the idea you had would probably be the best option. and it does fit with the preexisting story fairly well so i'd say go with your idea, as i originally said it was pretty good as it was.
